District Council launches new strategy to drive economic growth
Posted on: Wednesday, November 12, 2025Newark and Sherwood District Council has unveiled its new Sustainable Economic Growth Strategy, a forward-looking five-year plan developed to unlock the district’s potential, tackle long-standing challenges, and create a more resilient local economy.
The strategy builds on the successes of the previous five-year plan, which delivered over £31 million in business support during the pandemic and delivered transformative projects such as the Newark Air & Space Institute and expanded Future First Careers Expo.
The new strategy is based on research and community input. Last year, the Council carried out two key studies, a Social Mobility Report and a district-wide Economic Assessment. These studies highlighted positive trends, like improved overall social mobility. At the same time, they pointed out ongoing challenges, including comparatively low productivity, gaps in skills, and high levels of economic inactivity due to poor health. The area was also highlighted as one of the most challenged in the UK for young people to have positive outcomes for employment, training and qualifications.
In response, the Council has set out a clear vision with the new strategy:
“To make Newark and Sherwood a prosperous place, where productivity is high, inclusivity is at the heart of our communities, and opportunities are created and maintained for skills, qualifications and employment that enriches lives.”
The strategy outlines a series of priorities, including:
- Revitalising town centres with more homes, culture, leisure, and health services to boost footfall and diversity.
- Helping people gain skills and get access to education or jobs.
- Supporting recovery into work for those affected by illness or long-term health issues.
- Improving transport and infrastructure in areas with poor access, unlocking economic potential.
- Backing key local industries like Health, Transport, Clean Energy, Construction, ICT, and Manufacturing.
- Promoting Newark and Sherwood as a great place to live, work, and visit.
The end goal of the strategy is to grow the local economy by 2031, working with others in raising productivity, improving qualifications, boosting earnings, and helping more residents into work.
Councillor Claire Penny, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Economic Development at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “This strategy is about building a district where everyone has the chance to succeed. By investing in our town centres, supporting local businesses, and helping residents and young people develop the skills they need, we’re laying the foundations for an economically resilient and prosperous Newark and Sherwood.”
The District Council has developed the strategy in consultation with regional partners such as the East Midlands County Combined Authority, Nottinghamshire County Council, business groups, and education providers. Feedback from partners emphasised the need for stronger infrastructure, better support for start-ups, and a more compelling local identity to retain young talent and attract investment.
The strategy is accompanied by a detailed action plan, which includes major projects such as the Newark Town Centre Masterplan, the Ollerton Regeneration Scheme, and completion of important road projects such as the A46 Bypass and Newark Southern Link Road. It also incorporates a Destination Management Plan aimed at boosting the visitor economy.
