‘Well-loved and cherished’ Newark hospice nominated in national ‘giveback’ competition

Posted on: Thursday, October 23, 2025

A Newark hospice that provides a home from home for end-of-life care has been nominated in a national competition that aims to shine a light on the positive work happening in local communities.

Beaumond House Hospice Care in Newark was established in 1982 and has four bedrooms devoted to caring for patients at the end of their lives, alongside a day therapy service, and a Hospice at Home service.

Catheryn Lowe worked for Beaumond House for 10 years nominated the charity in the national competition:

“The service offered by Beaumond House is phenomenal. In my role, I would speak with families that the team had supported and they’d say Beaumond House was a lifeline, giving supported access to their loved ones at a time when every moment matters. It’s a very emotional time and there is only one chance to get it right.

“Beaumond House is a patient centred service, with a higher ratio of nurses to patients than in a hospital. The Hospice at Home service means people can have the end of their life at home, spending those invaluable last days where they want to be. This often means fewer journeys across the country and less anxiety. Wherever possible, every request and every choice is supported by Beaumond House.

“Located in an old Victorian Building, Beaumond House is very homely and has a sense of calm, with the warmth of the team shining through. People walk through the big blue door and are immediately welcomed with compassion. End of life care isn’t something many of us think about until we or a loved one is facing the end of their lives. And at a time when stress and anxiety is high, Beaumond House is there to support patients and their families.

“If we won The BIG Christmas Giveback, the Newark and Sherwood Gift Card would be used to make patients’ stays more comfortable. This could include items such as extra towels and bed linen to make their stay as comfortable as possible, or gifts to relieve anxiety and improve mental wellbeing.

“The team supports local businesses wherever possible and using the gift card to enhance patient care from within our local community would be a wonderful thing.”

The person or organisation with the most nominations in The BIG Christmas Giveback will win a £1,000 Town & City Gift Card—such as the Newark and Sherwood Gift Card—with one nominator also winning a £500 gift card.

Simon Machin, director of income generation at Beaumond House said: “We’re incredibly grateful for the nomination in The BIG Christmas Giveback. Being nominated is a wonderful reminder of the impact our care and support providers. We’re honoured to be part of such a caring and supportive community.

“The kind words and recognition of our compassionate, patient-centred care mean so much to us. If we were to win a Newark and Sherwood Gift Card, every penny could help the hospice to provide palliative care to patients and families across Newark & Sherwood.”

The Newark and Sherwood Gift Card launched in 2025 and can be spent with over 90 local businesses, including shops, restaurants, attractions, salons and services.

Councillor Claire Penny, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Economic Growth at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Beaumond House is a shining light in our community, providing a much needed, valued and appreciated service for patients at the end of their lives and their families.  It would be wonderful to see Beaumond House win this national competition, using the Newark and Sherwood Gift Card to support patients at a critical time.”

The Newark and Sherwood Gift Card is part of the award winning Town & City Gift Card concept from fintech Miconex. Over 20,000 local businesses are part of Miconex’s local gift card programs around the world with over £45m spent locally through the cards.

Colin Munro is the CEO of Miconex and said: “The nomination for Beaumond House is exactly the type of nomination we’re looking for in The BIG Christmas Giveback, so we can shine a light on the people and organisations making a positive difference locally. The Newark and Sherwood Gift Card is also centred on making a positive difference locally, providing a local option for gifts, rewards and incentives. I encourage everyone to nominate today, and consider using the Newark & Sherwood Gift Card to support local businesses.”
