New Community Classroom Opens at Sconce and Devon Park!
Posted on: Wednesday, September 17, 2025An exciting new multipurpose community classroom is now open at Sconce and Devon Park, through £24,000 grant funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The newly constructed facility will serve as a dedicated space for local schools, community organisations, and volunteer groups to participate in enhanced outdoor learning experiences and alternative education programmes. The project represents a significant investment in outdoor education and community engagement within the district.
Many local schools and groups already access the park on a regular basis, including the delivery of bespoke programmes for local young people as well as various diversionary activities.
As a result of the new formal facilities, the secure space will be suitable for access all year round, and for an increased variety of educational uses. In addition to its learning function, the classroom will act as a central hub for volunteer coordination and the hosting of a wide range of community events.
This initiative has been delivered by Newark and Sherwood District Council, in partnership with Newark Town Council and championed by the local community group ‘Sconce and Devon Park Community Group’. The group consists of 25 active volunteers and hold regular meetings to discuss how they can support elements of the park management and its landscape.
Councillor Simon Forde, Portfolio Holder for Climate and the Environment said: “Creating a space that encourages outdoor learning and connection with nature, will help foster a deeper understanding of the natural world and why it’s so important to protect it for future generations.
"We are really pleased to have worked in partnership with Newark Town Council and The Sconce and Devon Park Community Group to bring the original vision into being. With the support of the Shared Prosperity Fund, this facility will empower people locally to take an active role in climate action and learn more about biodiversity and sustainable living."
Councillor Dawn Campbell, Leader of Newark Town Council said: “We are very pleased to have worked with Newark and Sherwood District Council in bringing this project to fruition. The classroom sits in a really peaceful green space and will serve a wide range of people with outdoor learning opportunities. Traditional education settings don’t work for everyone and so for those with a passion for the great outdoors and the environment this is a very welcome new facility for Newark.”
The Chair of the Sconce and Devon Park Community Group said: “The Community Group of Sconce and Devon formerly known as the Friends of Sconce and Devon Park are delighted that the classroom is now up and running for the benefit of the local community. This multipurpose accessible building surrounded by nature is a great place to host activities for lots of different ages and abilities and has allowed groups to deliver a whole range of new and exciting activities. It is a great opportunity for people to enjoy the outdoors whilst learning new skills.”
