County Council by-election

The Nottinghamshire County Council elections were held on Thursday 1 May 2025. There are 10 County divisions in the Newark and Sherwood area which are Balderton, Blidworth, Collingham, Farndon and Trent, Muskham and Farnsfield, Newark East, Newark West, Ollerton, Sherwood Forest and Southwell. Each County division will elect one County Councillor.  Polling stations were open from 7am until 10pm. Poll cards were sent to registered voters who are eligible to vote in this election. Staff at your polling station will have asked you to confirm your name and address, checked your details on the register and then checked your voter ID before issuing your ballot paper. You could only vote if your name is included on the Register of Electors.

Voters needed to show photo ID to vote in person at polling stations this election. More information can be found on The Electoral Commission's website.

If you did not have an accepted photo ID, you could apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate, online - apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. Applications should be made online or via a form completed and returned to us by 5pm on Wednesday 23 April 2025 to receive your ID for this election. 

We could also help you to make an application if you visit us at Castle House or Ollerton Advice office. We would have checked you are registered to vote and you would just have to provide your date of birth and national insurance number.

If you did not wish to vote in person, you could apply to vote by post, no photo ID was required.

Registering to vote

The current register was first published on 1 December 2024. If you are not registered to vote, have recently moved address, changed your name or nationality, the deadline to register for this election was Friday 11 April 2025. You should be registered at your previous address to vote at this election if this was in our district or in the county. You can still apply to register, but this will only be effective after this election. If you do need to make a new application to register, you can apply to register online or if you cannot register online, please contact us.

Postal and Proxy voting

If you would like to vote by post, the deadline to apply for this election was 5pm on Monday 14 April 2025. You can still apply to vote by post online or complete a paper application form which is available from the Electoral Commission’s website at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter, but this will only be effective after this election.

This form must not be completed with an electronic signature. You can complete and return this form to us by post or scan the completed form and email to: voting@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk. If you cannot print a form, please contact us.

You will need your National Insurance number to hand when applying to vote by post.

If you have been granted a postal vote, you will not be able to vote in person at this election.

Postal ballot papers should be delivered by the following dates: -

  • Thursday 17 April 2025 if we receive the completed application by Tuesday 1 April 2025.
  • Wednesday 23 April 2025 if we receive the completed application between Wednesday 2 April 2025 and by 5pm on Monday 14 April 2025.

If you are away around these dates, we may be able to send your postal vote to a different address. You should contact us to see if this is possible. Alternatively, you could appoint a proxy who could vote on your behalf at your polling station.

Proxy voting

If you would like to apply to appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf, the deadline to apply for this election was 5pm on Wednesday 23 April 2025. You can still apply for a proxy vote online but this will only be effective after this election.

If you are unable to apply online, a paper application form is available from the Electoral Commission’s website at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter. This form must not be completed with an electronic signature. You can complete and return this form to us by post or scan the completed form and email to: voting@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk. If you cannot print a form, please contact us.

You will need your National Insurance number to hand when applying to vote by proxy.

Appointing an emergency proxy

If you have become unable to vote in person since the deadline to apply to appoint a proxy at 5pm on Wednesday 23 April 2025 because of either illness (PDF File, 259kb), due to employment (PDF File, 184kb), or based on photo ID (PDF File, 92kb), you can apply for an emergency proxy. This application form should be completed and returned to us by 5pm on polling day if it is to be effective for this election. This form must not be completed with an electronic signature. You can complete and return this form to the address shown on the form or scan the completed form and email to: voting@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk.

Notice of Election

The Notice of Election (PDF File, 121kb) was published on Tuesday 25 March 2025 and publicises the election, gives the date in which prospective candidates must submit a nomination paper and consent to nomination.

Statement of Persons Nominated

Notice of Poll, including polling places

The Notice of Poll and Polling Places (PDF File, 113kb) will be published, no later than Wednesday 23 April 2025. This notice gives details of the remaining validly nominated candidates following last date for a candidate to withdraw and the polling places to be used.

Counting of the votes

Firstly, the ballot boxes were verified to ensure that the number of ballot papers in each box is the number that has been issued. Postal ballot papers that are to be included in the count were also verified. Once all votes are verified, the ballot papers were sorted and counted for each candidate.

The verification of the ballot boxes took place at Newark Sports and Fitness Centre, Lord Hawke Way, Newark, NG24 4FH, following the close of poll at 10pm on Thursday 1 May 2025.

The counting of the votes took place at Newark Sports and Fitness Centre, Lord Hawke Way, Newark, NG24 4FH, at 11am on Friday 2 May 2025.
