Political changes at Newark and Sherwood District Council
Posted on: Monday, May 11, 2026Media statement on political changes at Newark and Sherwood District Council.
Councillor Paul Peacock, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council:
“Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) is the biggest change that has happened to local government in over 50 years. As we approach LGR, my priority is to ensure that residents of Newark and Sherwood benefit fully from the transition to a unitary authority. It is important to me that this transition is as seamless as possible, with high- quality services maintained throughout and that the District Council approaches LGR collaboratively, making informed and cohesive decisions. To support this, I have carefully considered what else is needed in our Cabinet.
“At Full Council, I will appoint Councillor Peter Harris to Cabinet as Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services. These vital services underpin the delivery of all front-facing functions provided by the District Council and will need time invested into them to prepare for LGR.
“In addition, I welcome the formal and strong collaboration taking place between the Liberal Democrats, the Newark and Sherwood District Independents, the Labour Group, and Independents for Newark and District. This really is a sensible and sound collaboration and in working together, we can ensure the best possible decisions are made for the residents of Newark and Sherwood.”
Councillor Peter Harris, Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services at Newark and Sherwood District Council:
“I am delighted to be working collaboratively with fellow councillors to ensure we deliver the very best services for our residents across the whole district. I am committed to preparing our services effectively for Local Government Reorganisation, supporting a seamless transition to the new unitary authority.
“It is vital that we invest the necessary time and focus to ensure our corporate services are well positioned for the future. I would like to thank Councillor Peacock for recognising the importance of this work and for placing his confidence in me to deliver it.”
Councillor Debbie Darby, Newark and Sherwood District Councillor, Leader of the Newark and Sherwood Independents:
“As a lifelong resident of Newark, I am deeply committed to securing the best possible outcomes for our community. As we move towards Local Government Reorganisation, I will continue to ensure that the local voice is clearly represented in all decision-making. I am honoured to play a role in this formal collaboration, which will ensure the very best outcomes for our residents.”
Councillor Simon Forde, Portfolio Holder for Climate and the Environment, Leader of the Independents for Newark and the District:
“Environmental Services covers many of the most visible services residents rely on every day, including bin collections, recycling, parks and green spaces. This new collaboration, and Cabinet appointment, gives us a strong and stable platform to keep improving these services and align spending to what resident’s value most.
“As we plan for the changes LGR will bring, we have a real opportunity to make sure the new arrangements inherit services that are well-run, efficient and fit for the future. My focus will be on maintaining high standards, supporting our environmental ambitions, and ensuring residents continue to receive excellent services.”
